SummaryThis course will provide an interdisciplinary survey of the culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking world. Students will be introduced to the 7 nations whose official language is Portuguese, although specific focus will be placed on Portugal, Brazil, and Portuguese-speaking Africa (especially Angola and Mozambique). The diversity of cultural expression across three continents will be explored through the study of three literary texts in their historical context, as well as through reference to other forms of articulation, such as film, music and art.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the main currents in Portuguese, Brazilian and Lusophone African history, culture and politics, as seen through a range of disciplines, using a selection of core theories and concepts
  2. Learn about historical debate and adopt a critical approach to cultural artefacts in the Lusophone World
  3. Assess the relationship between history and culture, comparing and contrasting ideas, concepts and issues while taking account of different disciplinary and geographical contexts
  4. Consider the present in relation to the past and understand the wider role of literature, culture and memory in the shaping of nations' identity.
  5. Develop analytical, communication and presentation skills through group discussions and individual presentations on aspects of culture and history related to the Portuguese-speaking world
