Summary | Classes are seminars of written and spoken language classes with native speakers. Points of grammar will be covered on a weekly basis and these will be reinforced in small group spoken and written language classes with the intention of consolidating the student's proficiency in the 4 core skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
If you are a first year joint hons student studying two languages you may not take this course. It is available to second year joint hons language students.
During hybrid delivery there will be two weekly sessions of 50 minutes each of contact time which will alternate online and on-campus teaching. In addition, students will be provided with other opportunities to practice their language skills by taking part in speaking class activities in Catalan and posting on the class' Discussion Board.
Students will also be expected to do some group work to write collaborative text and to deliver oral presentations. |
Course description |
Catalan Language for Beginners is taught through the medium of Catalan and follows a flipped classroom approach, which empowers students to be in control of their own learning process. Prior to each contact session, students engage with different materials and complete e-learning activities, so that contact hours can focus on the practical application of Catalan.
Most e-learning activities follow a plurilingual approach, which encourages students to reflect and to draw from the knowledge of languages they already know, including their own. In this way, they develop their metalanguage and metacognition whilst they improve their Catalan.
The course uses authentic Catalan sources such as videos on Catalan traditions or places of interest in Catalonia, infographics on famous historical figures, paintings of famous artists, newspaper articles and clips from TV, which allow students to engage with different aspects of Catalan culture and society while learning new vocabulary and being exposed to different aspects of grammar.
