Summary | Basque Language for Beginners is an introductory survey of the Basque language. Although the main focus of the course will be the language, Basque culture and society will also be discussed as contexts for the language. Significant emphasis is placed upon developing good oral, listening, reading, and writing skills, which will be a solid foundation for the further study of the language. Students are expected to engage regularly in independent language learning via the e-learning modules set up on Learn. By the end of the course, students will be able to write speak and understand the spoken language on a basis level (A1-A2 on the Common European Framework for Languages). They will also be able to communicate in the context of simple day-to-day situations.

Course description |
This course will be taught using a structural-communicative methodology, which is goals- and skills-oriented, and focuses on communicative competence. Students will acquire the basic foundations of the Basque language by practicing oral and written expression, with reference to grammatical forms specific to the communicative tasks and goals. Part of the learning process involves becoming acquainted with the structural particularities of the Basque language. Students will learn the language through the process of communicating in it. This practice is guided in class and supported online. It is important to emphasise that students will also learn about the Basque culture and socio-linguistic aspects of the language.
