Course description |
This option will examine Spanish American poetry and prose written between independence from Spain and 1900. Texts will be studied in their historical context and the selection comprises epic poetry, national romances, short stories and essays. Topics will include the wars of independence, the recovery of the pre-Columbian past, Romanticism, nation building, gender, ethnicity, and race.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand how wars of independence, the recovery of the pre-Columbian past, Romanticism, nation building, gender, ethnicity, and race have shaped Spanish American literature from independence to 1900.
- Demonstrate analytical engagement with key concepts, themes, and stylistic features in nineteenth-century Spanish American literature
- Demonstrate awareness of the social, cultural and historical conditions in nineteenth-century Spanish American countries
- Undertake detailed textual analysis, articulate coherent arguments and show a high level of expression in written and oral work
