| Summary | This is a course in translation from Portuguese into English. Each week, students will translate a text, or an extract from a text sourced from a range of periods and genres (literary, journalistic, didactic, technical, commercial, etc.) and therefore in differing registers. Classes typically focus on a short set translation, prepared in advance, and the tutor works with the students to consider different lexical options, inconsistencies, challenges, idea of translation strategy, target readership, etc., during the tutorial. |

3x 400-word translations [1200 words, Portuguese into English]
3x 250-word commentaries [750 words in English]
Students will be required to research the text and write a short commentary (of approximately 250 words) to accompany their translations. The commentary should set out their research, interpretation, strategy and any obstacles they faced in their translations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- translate competently from Portuguese in a variety of styles and registers and in a range of genres
- deal effectively with cultural and linguistic differences between texts in Portuguese and English;
- engage successfully with register, idiom, rhythm, nuance and ambiguity in translation;
- demonstrate competence in the identification, analysis and evaluation of the translation problems that the texts raise with reflection upon process.
