Summary | This course aims to provide a brief but inclusive introduction to the key role played by Sicilian culture in a bottom-up history of the Italian literary canon, outlining the diversity of cultural traditions that marked its origins and its development, from minority to mainstream (and vice versa): from the Sicilian School of love poetry, which is credited with the invention of the sonnet and the earliest Italian poetry ¿in a feminine voice¿, to the Sicilian novels which fashioned the major narratives of the unification of Italy, the evolution of mafia, and the entanglements of fascism with the stereotype of the Latin lover in literature and cinema. |
