| Summary | The course aims at achieving a basic knowledge of the Russian language in main receptive and productive skills. The aims of the course include building up the grammar and vocabulary base for entering the second year or for continuing independent study of Russian. The Russian Culture component of the course offers an introduction to main historical events in Russia and its cultural and literary achievements. |
| Course description |
The course will build the foundations of Russian language skills and knowledge of Russian culture. Students will develop core linguistic skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing at beginners level, and gain a broad understanding of Russian history and culture. Students will have five components per week: Culture, Grammar, Oral, Listening Skills, and Text Comprehension and Production.
The Culture component of the course introduces major themes of Russian culture. The Grammar elements give students a foundation of the basic structures of Russian, enabling them to express themselves in Russian, with focus on the case system, gender, and grammatical agreement. In the Oral class, students work in small groups, starting with basic dialogues and later engaging in conversation, discussion, and role play. In Listening Skills, students listen to recordings or watch videos and develop comprehension of spoken Russian and practise their pronunciation skills. In Text Comprehension and Production, students analyse text structures and train their comprehension, and produce texts themselves.
All course components allow students to build up a sound foundation of vocabulary needed to express themselves on a range of everyday topics.

Other requirements | If your entry qualification for Russian is a Scottish Higher, you will be automatically admitted to 1B. However, if you enter the course more than twelve months after you took your Higher, you should take our Diagnostic Test. If this tells us that you are better suited to 1A than to 1B, you will be given the option of switching to 1A. The Diagnostic Test is also open to students who have done a "crash Higher" whether or not it was in the past twelve months. Students with a 'C' pass at Higher (SQA) or A-level may be considered for entry to 1A at the discretion of the Course Organiser.
All other students whose entry qualification for Russian is three years old: if your entry qualification for Russian entitles you to admission to 1B, you will be automatically admitted to 1B. However, you may also, if you wish, take our Diagnostic Test, and if this tells us that you are better suited to 1A than to 1B, you will be given the option of switching to 1A. (We recommend that you take the test if you have not engaged in language learning activities since you gained that entry qualification.)
To take the Diagnostic Test, please contact your 1B Course Organiser as soon as possible.
Please note that changing from 1B to 1A is not allowed in any other circumstances, and is not possible after week 2 of semester 1.

Oral 15%: 4 in-class dialogues, 2 presentations

Text comprehension and production 20%: 4 short homework pieces (marked at 100% for submission of any quality. feedback on quality will be given), 2 home assignments

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
