SCQF Credits | 20 |
ECTS Credits | 10 |
Summary | This course aims to cover key attributes of dental material science as applied to the endodontic and restorative care of a patient.
By completing this course, students will have greater awareness of the vast range of dental materials available on commercial dental markets. They will also critically explore the current scientific literature and experimental models used in their verification to inform their practice. |
Course description |
Practical implementation of a treatment plan requires detailed knowledge of a wide range of dental materials and how to manipulate them. Understanding material behaviour will also enable effective communication of their advantages and disadvantages when gaining informed consent for treatment.
This course is delivered using seminars, lectures and pre-recorded lectures (delivered using Media Hopper via Learn VLE).
Topics covered include:
1. Material properties
2. Endodontic irrigants
3. Metallurgy of endodontic instruments
4. Obturation materials
5. Bioceramic materials
6. Direct restorative materials
7. Post materials (direct/indirect)
8. Dental Ceramics
9. Dental alloys
10. Dentine bonding
11. Cement lutes
12. Impression, provisional and bite registration materials.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of dental material properties in the endodontic and restorative management of patients.
- Have knowledge of commonly utilised laboratory tests used to assess dental materials.
- Apply their understanding of dental material properties in order to choose the most appropriate material for the management of specific endodontic cases.
- Demonstrate an understanding of newly emerging materials in endodontics and have an ability to appraise these new materials prior to their use.
