Summary | Geography Small Research Project: Edinburgh¿s Geographies
This course is offered an alternative to the MA Geography field courses. The course introduces the fascinating, and often troubling, geographies, histories and futures of Edinburgh and its surrounding landscapes. The course will develop the students¿ understanding of the research process from Fundamental Methods in Geography (research design, theoretical frameworks for research, methods, fieldwork, and analysis). The course complements learning about geography¿s histories and philosophies in Geographical Nature of Geographical Knowledge, and builds towards semester 2 courses Key Methods in Human Geography and Fundamentals of Research Design, which prepare students to undertake independent research in Geography.
In the course students will examine the relationships between field work, the research process and the construction of geographical knowledge. The course will build on, and extend, understandings of key theoretical approaches and substantive concerns that students have encountered in pre-Honours human geography course by applying them to a local context. |
Course description |
The course is organised around themes that address key theoretical and substantive concerns in Human Geography through a close examination of places and landscapes in and around Edinburgh. Each theme will be introduced via a lecture or asynchronous material made available via Learn that will provide an overview of the theme; relate the theme to Edinburgh; and reflect on the research process. Each theme will also be accompanied by a self-guided walk that students are expected to complete independently in small groups. A virtual version of each walk will be available for those students who are not on campus.
