Summary | Students will gain an overview of the complexities of maternal and child health from a global perspective. The course will explore the main causes and underlying determinants of maternal morbidity and mortality and child health and development. Interventions that improve outcomes will be explored and how outcomes are influenced by local, national and international factors will be examined. |

The course will cover the following topics:
1. Determinants and consequences of maternal morbidity and mortality and child health and development
2. Measurement of maternal and child health indicators: methods and challenges
3. Inequalities in maternal and child health and development
4. Evidence-based interventions for maternal and child health and the continuum of care
5. Health system strengthening to improve maternal and child health
6. Local, national and international issues and approaches to monitoring and improving maternal and child health

- Develop a critical understanding of key evidence-based interventions to optimise maternal health and child health and development
- Understand the methods and challenges of measuring key outcome indicators for maternal health and child health and development
- Be aware of inequalities in maternal health and child health and development and the countries and groups of people within countries that are most severely affected
- Be familiar with the global health agenda for maternal health and child health and development including targets (e.g. MDGs and SDGs), strategies, policies and investments to drive progress
