Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course the student should be able to :

-Understand the basis, and application, of serological and nucleic acid test for the detection of transfusion transmitted infection, including the role of confirmatory tests and reference microbiology laboratories. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the steps taken to reduce risk of its transmission are included.
-Understand the basis, and application, of testing blood donations for blood groups, and the approach to preparation and assessment of reagents for these tests
-Understand the basis, and application, for the preparation and quality control of components from blood donations
-Understand the principles of risk management and hazard reporting, European and UK regulations relevant to these fields and the approaches used to ensure appropriate and effective use of blood and its components in patients.
