Course description |
This course will allow students to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding in gastroenterology, focussing on benign and cancerous gastrointestinal diseases, GI emergencies, and common bowel disorders (e.g. Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Acute and Chronic Diarrhoea). Hepato-PancreatoBiliary disease (HPB) is also covered. Individual speciality tutors will use increasingly complex clinical case studies to broaden knowledge. They will guide students to appropriate seminal publications in their speciality and encourage them to present and review recent journal article in a group setting (online journal club). Online publication review forms will also be used to assess of literature evaluation skills. Historically important, controversial, topical and novel papers will be discussed.
Students writing skills will also be enhanced through the formative assessments (a case report or review article), which should contain an appropriate review of the literature in their specialist area. Students will be encouraged to publish these pieces of work where possible.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply the relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes in assessing and managing patients presenting with the common conditions encountered in gastroenterology
- Evaluate the anatomy, physiology and pathology underpinning the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and disorders of the liver
- Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to issues which are informed by developments at the forefront of gastroenterology
- Synthesise and communicate information effectively with peers, more senior colleagues and specialists
- Critically assess medical research in order to identity its strengths, weaknesses and how it might be applied in clinical practice
