Summary | This 10-credit course will allow students to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding in haematology, including haematological malignancy and clotting disorders. |
Course description |
Individual speciality tutors will use increasingly complex clinical case studies to broaden students¿ knowledge in haematology. They will guide students to appropriate seminal publications in speciality areas and encourage them to present and review recent journal article in a group setting (online journal club). Online publication review forms will also be used to assess of literature evaluation skills. Historically important, controversial, topical and novel papers will be discussed.
Students writing skills will also be enhanced through the summative assessments (a case report or review article), which should contain an appropriate review of the literature in their specialist area. Students will be encouraged to publish these pieces of work where possible.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply a range of specialised research in cell biology to the evaluation of causes and treatments of common haematological conditions
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relevant basic scientific principles underpinning haematological malignancies, and recognise and formulate management plans for the treatment of such malignancies
- Evaluate the risks associated with transfusion and recognise transfusion associated reactions
- Practise in a wide and often unpredictable variety of professional level contexts (working with clinicians/basic scientists/allied health professionals)
- Make informed judgements in situations in the absence of complete or consistent data/information
