Summary | This 10-credit course allows students to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding in the speciality area of neurology, and covers topics such as presentation of neurological disease in the acute and clinical settings, how immunological diseases affect the brain and the nervous system, and diseases of the peripheral nervous system. |
Course description |
Individual speciality tutors will use increasingly complex clinical case studies to broaden knowledge. They will guide students to appropriate seminal publications in their speciality and encourage them to present and review recent journal article in a group setting (online journal club). Online publication review forms will also be used to assess of literature evaluation skills. Historically important, controversial, topical and novel papers will be discussed. Students¿ writing skills will also be enhanced through summative assessment (ePoster presentation).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the basic science underpinning the causes of and clinical presentation of common neurological diseases
- Appraise the role of the immune system and its dysfunction in the development of neurological pathology
- Diagnose and formulate management plans for common neurological conditions seen in acute/internal medicine
- Critically assess medical research in order to identity its strengths, weaknesses and how it might be applied in neurological practice
- Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to produce a poster on a neurology-related topic
