SummaryAdvanced Persian for postgraduates is a component of Persian Civilisation MSc programme. This course will emphasis on giving the students a more in-depth knowledge of Persian language skills at advanced level. The aim of this course is to improve grammatical accuracy and widen vocabulary and to develop students' writing, reading, speaking and listening skills. Society, culture, history, politics and literature are among the topics covered in this course. Intensive readings, writing essays, summarizing and translations in addition to regular oral presentations and aural practices form the content of Advanced Persian for postgraduate. Variety of sources and practices on exciting topics related to both contemporary and historic contexts makes this course an attractive choice for the students of MSc in Persian Civilisation. While improving their language skills students are exposed to a wide range of rich content related to Iran and Persian civilisation.
Course description Academic description:
Advanced Persian for postgraduates will broaden students' knowledge of Persian language skills at an advanced level. The course will aim to improve students' knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and 'complex language structures and use through intensive reading, writing, speaking and listening lessons and practices. The emphasis of the course will be on improving grammatical accuracy and widen vocabulary by engaging them in advanced practices for different language skills. The students will be enabled to read, write, translate, summarize (both written and oral) and analyse complex texts on a variety of topics related to Iran's society, culture, history, politics and literature both in contemporary and 'classical contexts. Regular oral presentations and aural practices also provide students with a better opportunity to develop these skills.

Outline content:
Advanced Persian for postgraduates covers both contemporary and classical contexts related to Iran and Persian civilisation. Topics related to society, culture, history, literature and politics of Iran will form the content of the course. These areas are covered through introducing a variety of sources including book chapters, scholarly articles, and media literature, contemporary writings such as short stories and poetry and classical Persian prose. Intensive practices of reading complex texts, writing, translating, summarizing, oral presentations and aural practices gives students an opportunity to expand their language skills as well as their knowledge about Persian civilisation. Students will be enabled to improve their language skills further by regular and intensive discussions after readings, oral presentations and aural sessions. These discussions will be in question and answer form or open debates on specific topics. Listening to TV interviews, roundtable discussions and news from Iranian channels following by summarising main points in Persian will be practiced in aural sessions. In addition, students will be asked to watch acclaimed Iranian movies and write critically about them and discuss their views orally in class. Students are encouraged to use new learnt vocabulary and vocabulary exercises are given frequently.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. read and comprehend more complex texts in Persian, to write in an advanced level on a variety of different topics related to Iran
  2. translate and summarize text from Iranian media
  3. have developed their vocabulary in a manner where they able to read and engage with extended texts in Persian on an increasing range of subjects
  4. engage actively in discussions and debates on current affairs in Persian

Additional Class Delivery Information The course will be taught in an interactive environment when the students are actively engaged during the class in reading, translation, summarising and oral presentations and discussions. There will be frequent tasks both written and oral for inside and out with the class. Students are expected to engage with question and answering tasks after oral presentations and also to feedback and summarise presentations of their peers.
