Summary | Persian 2A for PG credit is designed to lead on from Persian 1A and 1B and provides a further development of linguistic skills in the modern language. This course consolidates the students' knowledge of modern Persian. This course is focused on development of four main linguistic skills, grammatical structures and translation. Knowledge of basic grammar structures will be revised and extended. Students will begin to acquire the vocabulary of formal reading and conversation. This course runs in semester 1 only. |
Course description |
1) Academic description: Persian 2A for PG credit is designed to lead on from Persian 1A and 1B and provides a further development of linguistic skills in the modern language. This course consolidates the students' knowledge of modern Persian. This course is focused on development of four main linguistic skills, grammatical structures and translation. This course runs in semester 1 only.
2) Content: This course provides deeper understanding of grammar and linguistic skills in modern Persian. Detailed grammatical structures are provided. Oral skills are further developed through covering social and everyday topics. Knowledge of basic grammar structures will be revised and extended. Students will work on translation skills. Students will begin to acquire the vocabulary of formal reading and conversation. Selected texts in Modern Persian are studied and are supplemented by an introduction to the modern literature and culture of Iran. Aural skills are further developed by use of media. Vocabulary will cover a range of different social and cultural topics. Students are exposed to Persian society, history and culture through different sources.
3) Student Learning Experience: Students normally (pre-Covid 19) take 5 hours of contact per week on different skills of language. They also engage with weekly homework assignments, including grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing and listening assignments; quizzes and online content.

For the mid-term test, students will be given the chance to review their answer sheets/marks and the course organiser will go through all the questions with students in class. Students will receive feedback on formative homework assignments on a weekly basis. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Confidently use Persian grammar to read, understand and translate straightforward texts in Persian.
- Start a conversation in Persian on topics that are familiar, describe incidents, express their feelings, and give prepared presentations.
- Understand main points of discussion on familiar topics and everyday subjects. They will be able to understand straightforward information on familiar everyday topics.
- Compose a text of around 100-150 words on different familiar topics and explain, describe and discuss the subject forming longer sentences and using a variety of grammatical constructions such as different conjunctions.
- Assimilate information about society and culture and obtain a deeper understanding of Persian literature, art and culture.
