SummaryThe course enables students to explore a topic in-depth, by interrogating evidence to address questions identified by the student and relevant to their workplace and professional development. The topic will be selected in agreement with an allocated supervisor and will not cover substantive areas explored in other courses in the programme. Each student will meet with their course supervisor on 3 occasions (via Skype, phone, Collaborate or Instant Messaging). Students will also discuss their learning on the course with fellow students, through the Discussion Board (via Moodle).

Students may take their topic from this course as the focus of their dissertation, subject to the agreement of the Programme Director. However, students will not be allowed to reproduce any of the material they submit for their course assignment (see below), within their dissertations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate critical knowledge of a substantial body of literature relevant to their programme of study Critically evaluate the empirical and/or theoretical quality of the literature pertaining to their chosen topic Demonstrate transferable cognitive skills in conducting literature searchers and evaluating the quality of research evidence
  2. critically evaluate the empirical and / or theoretical quality of the literature pertaining to their chosen topic
  3. demonstrate transferable cognitive skills in conducting literature searchers and evaluating the quality of research evidence
  4. evidence an ability to critically synthesise published evidence in order to develop new lines of argument
