SummaryThe course covers key legal issues and has a focus on the knowledge and skills required of a lawyer involved in public sector work. The course focuses on the different processes and challenges within both Central Government and Local Government. It also covers public interest litigation and judicial review - using the law as a tool for campaigning and policy change.
Course description This course aims to develop your awareness of:
- the processes and functions of both Central Government and Local Government. The aim is to explore the advisory role of a public sector lawyer and the key considerations in decision/policy making.
- the legislative framework that governs both Central Government and Local Government and the relevant governance in respect of the political aspects.
- how and why universities are affected by public law, including principles of public procurement.

The objective of the course is to enhance your legal skills and knowledge in this area of the law. It is also aims to enhance and consolidate your knowledge, understanding and personal reflection on the Law Society of Scotland's PEAT 1 Mandatory and Core Outcomes, which you have already experienced and shall continue to experience on the Diploma core courses.

Additional Information (Assessment) The Scottish Contemporary Public Law elective is assessed by continuous assessment. Students will receive a percentage mark for the whole course. 60% of this will be based on class performance, and 40% of this will be based on an assessed written exercise.
Feedback Feedback is provided to student in various forms. Students will receive verbal feedback from tutors on in-class presentations, general comments on class assignments when these are handed back in class and, in general, on class performance, mainly looking at the class as a whole. Students also receive specific written feedback on assignments, where necessary.
