| Summary | Swahili 1B provides a further interactive and stimulating introduction to both the Swahili language and to various contemporary and historical aspects of East African literatures and cultures. This course will continue developing students' language skills and bring students to A1 level of language proficiency as formulated in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). |
| Course description |
Swahili 1B is designed to build on the introductory course Swahili 1A and provides the opportunity to obtain an intermediate level of the language. The course has been designed to provide a contemporary, engaging and effective model of learning that will enable significant progress in a short space of time. Students will increase their knowledge of key grammatical concepts and useful vocabulary, while also looking at relevant topics, such as music festivals, films, literature, East African cooking and the Swahili speaking diaspora.
Completion of Swahili 1B will provide the students with a solid basis for further study or travel to the region for leisure, employment or research.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- comfortably use a range of syntactic structures and some vocabulary beyond everyday interactions
- to read and understand simple texts on a variety of topic
- to deliver a short oral presentation and answer related questions
- to write a short composition on topics related to aspects of East African literatures and cultures
- to communicate with native speakers in simple ever- day life situation
