| Summary | Swahili 1B for postgraduates is designed to build on Swahili 1A and provides students with the opportunity to further develop their Swahili language skills in an interactive, stimulating and effective way. This course will bring students to A1 level of language proficiency as formulated in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) while also give students the opportunity to engage with elements of traditional as well as modern East African cultures. By the end of the course, students will have been provided with a solid basis for further study and/or travelling to the region for research or work.

| Course description |
In Swahili 1B for postgraduates, students will increase their knowledge of key grammatical concepts and useful vocabulary, while also looking at relevant topics, such as East African music and festivals, Swahili literatures and translation, Swahili cuisine, travel and tourism, the East African film industry or the Swahili diaspora around the world. Students will also learn basic skills to perform an interview in Swahili and apply these skills in hands-on exercises.
While the course does follow on directly from Swahili 1A for postgraduates, students who did not take this course will be considered, providing they are sufficiently comfortable with the grammar and vocabulary required. If you would like to enrol onto Swahili 1B, but you have not completed Swahili 1A, please contact the course convenor.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- comfortably use a range of syntactic structures and some vocabulary beyond everyday interactions
- to read and understand simple texts on a variety of topic
- to deliver a short oral presentation and answer related questions
- to write a short composition on topics related to aspects of East African literatures and cultures
- to communicate with native speakers in simple ever- day life situation
