|Summary||Course for final year students in Honours programmes in Mathematics.
Matrix groups: the general and special linear groups and subgroups preserving bilinear forms. The Lie algebra of a matrix group: the exponential map. Transformation groups: the group acting on itself and on its Lie algebra: the adjoint representation. Quaternions.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand matrix groups and their Lie algebras, as an application of linear algebra.
- Understand transformation groups and the notion of invariance.
- Gain an appreciation of the interplay between different areas of mathematics in the setting of matrix groups.
