| Summary | The course is congruent and contiguous with Year 1, comprising the three principal strands, basic, clinical and social sciences. These are co-ordinated and integrated by problem-based learning scenarios through two modules (neuroscience and GI). Each module will include some biomedical science, behavioural and psychosocial science (which are the two major strands) and clinical science, but to varying proportions. The themes of each module will include problems of a patient with disease of a particular organ system. The interrelationship of biological, psychological and social factors in the causation of disease and on the ability of patients to be cured of or to live with the disease will be demonstrated and serve to emphasise that all learning is relevant to the practice of medicine. The purpose of the courses in Year 2 of the medical course is to act as a bridge between the broad introduction in Year 1 and the more specific, systems-based courses that follow in Year 4. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- As a scholar and scientist, on completion of Molecules to Society 2a, the successful student will be able to demonstrate, and apply to clinical scenarios, evidence-informed understanding of the principles, methods and knowledge of biomedical sciences related to neurosciences, GI and liver systems.
- As a practitioner, on completion of Molecules to Society 2a, the successful student will be able to apply judgement to clinical scenarios, through the application of biomedical and clinical sciences related to the neuroscience and gastrointestinal systems, and use computers to create and share information.
- As a professional, on completion of Molecules to Society 2a, the successful student will be able to plan and regulate personal learning and contributions to group learning, guided by intended learning outcomes, and reflective practice, and will demonstrate understanding of the core ethical, professional and legal responsibilities expected of medical students and doctors, participate successfully in all roles in a PBL group, giving accurate constructive feedback as required, and attend to personal health, wellbeing and professional development.
