SummaryYear 2 of the medicine programme will build on your understanding of health, disease and wellbeing and how these are affected by society and the wider environment. The course will give an understanding of research methods and interpretation of scientific information. This knowledge will be integrated with common diseases and will build on core professional values and ethical principles introduced in Year 1.
Course description The course will cover Command and Control, Transitions, Renal and Urology and Nutrition and Digestion. This knowledge will be integrated with clinical practice.
Socio-ethical Aspects of Medicine (SEAM) will cover social determinants of illness, meaning of illness, experience of illness, medical ethics, public health and health improvement.
Research and Evidence Based Medicine (REBM) will cover understanding information, the role of evidence based medicine, hypothesis driven and hypothesis free research, types of data, evaluating interventions, critical appraisal and communication of research.
Knowledge to Clinical Practice is directed towards helping students acquire the skills, attributes and related knowledge necessary to practise medicine.
Professional Skills will cover importance of communication, empathy, compassion and well being.
The course will be delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, online resources and online sessions. Clinical and communication skills sessions and Problem Based Learning will also be used to explore more deeply both knowledge and approach to learning.

Assessment (Further Info) Written Exam 50 %, Coursework 40 %, Practical Exam 10 %
Additional Information (Assessment) This is a year long assessed course. All students in Year 2 must undertake and pass Semester 1 and 2 Knowledge Tests (online examinations). The Knowledge Tests in Semester 1 and 2 will consist of questions with both single best answers and very short answer questions. Results from summative assessment 1 and 2 will be combined to make a single score, and the definitive pass level will be determined on this score. Failure at this point would lead to exclusion. «br /»
There will be essays in Socio-ethical Aspects of Medicine which must be passed.«br /»
Group projects: Student selected components are group projects which must be passed.«br /»
Professionalism: Students should aim for 100% attendance and engagement and professional behaviour must be maintained in order to progress.
Feedback Feedback will be provided after each progress test and students will receive written feedback on strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement. Feedback will be provided on overall performance, as well as specific domains within each knowledge test including areas of knowledge and skills.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of how the body functions in health and disease.
  2. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of how society and environment influence disease.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical and professional principles in medicine.
