Summary | This course will focus on the individual and professional development aspects of clinical education, more specifically, it will consider the psychological aspects of a student's professional and personal development. Concepts and research evidence pertaining to, different types of appraisal, and underpinning evidence will be discussed, along with the difference between appraisal and supervision and the essential components of an effective appraisal process. The tension between the personal benefits of appraisal and its potential role in re-validation, with consideration of appropriate evidence to discuss at an appraisal and appreciation the value of a well-designed PDP and what makes an effective appraisal process? Some consideration will be given to the psychological issues concerning critical professional experiences (serious clinical errors, pressures of onerous clinical obligations). The value of self-evaluation, MSF, 360 degree appraisal, peer-review and other forms of evidence as central instruments for professional development will be included. Self-management by objectives; personal targets and performance indicators; feedback from students and peers; reflective practice using evidence from video and other sources will be considered. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically appraise the rationale that supports self and peer evaluation and appreciate the process of appraisal and educational supervision.
- Organise and take part in professional appraisal both as appraisee and appraiser and reflect on the process.
- Appraise and understand how to manage underperformance.
- Appreciate the concept of personal development.
- Critically review appropriate strategies and tools to address learning needs in relation to work as a professional and as a teacher.
