SummaryThis will be an original piece of work that demonstrates the ability to undertake a scholarly investigation into an issue relating to Clinical Education. This can also take the form of a paper for publication, in addition to a supporting commentary document.

This course is only available to those studying a one year programme.
Course description The dissertation is designed to further develop the student's academic skills and ability to obtain and interrogate research data to provide further insights in the clinical education field. The dissertation project is designed to further develop the student's understanding of the processes and planning involved in undertaking research and to develop their academic writing skills.

Before beginning, a detailed proposal must be submitted and approved by the programme team. Each student will be allocated a supervisor for the duration of the dissertation. As with all courses on this programme, students will be encouraged to research an area of direct interest to their professional role.

A dissertation of a maximum of 15,000 words will be required. This will be an original piece of work that demonstrates the ability to undertake an investigation into an issue relating to Clinical Education. The dissertation can also take the form of a paper for publication, in addition to a supporting commentary document.
Feedback Work will be independently marked by 2 internal markers and sent to the External Examiner.

Both internal markers comments (and any from the External Examiner) will be collated anonymously and sent to the student along with a mark.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Define and carry out an appropriate literature search and critically appraise relevant literature, which successfully contextualises their proposed study.
  2. Choose appropriate research methods for collecting and analysing data and apply ethical principles and analysis to research, seeking appropriate ethical approval, obtaining and recording informed consent for participation in research as appropriate.
  3. Undertake work in accordance with appropriate regulations such as the Data Protection Act.
  4. Analyse research data, synthesise findings and draw appropriate conclusions, propose next steps in the research project.
  5. Disseminate research findings, and where possible write a scientific paper suitable for publication.
