Summary | This course aims to explore personal and professional development for clinicians/practitioners within clinical and educational contexts and roles.
Participants will reflect on their own development and educational needs both as a clinician/practitioner and as an educator. They will consider the rationale for personal professional development (PPD) and its impact upon the needs of the organisation, colleagues, students and their own career progress. The impact of these PPD components upon patient care will also be considered.
Participants will contextualise PPD, examine the factors which might influence an individual's engagement with the process and consider support strategies.

Course description |
Please note that, as a second year course, this will involve greater self-direction than first year courses. Students will play a greater role in directing discussions and finding appropriate resources to make use of and discuss with peers.
This course will be comprised of a set of themes, supported by live online conversations and asynchronous discussion forums. Live conversations will include guest speakers, small group wprk and group discussions around weekly tasks.
Workbooks, teaching resources, relevant literature and articles will be posted on the Blackboard Learn Virtual Learning Environment.
Participants will be required to reflect upon and map their career trajectory from graduation to a point in the future, before designing a final PPD plan.
The reflective account and PPD plan will form the basis of the assessment tasks of this course.

Additional Information (Assessment) |
There will be a formative assignment, consisting of a reflective exercise, demonstrating an understanding of the salient concepts of the first 5 weeks. Any gaps identified should act as a basis for study towards the final assessment.
For the summative assignment, students will appraise the Personal and Professional Development (PPD) model used in clinical or educational settings or where there is no PPD in place, to discuss the implications of the absence of this. Using models, theories and concepts identified within the course, the student will propose an alternative PPD, identifying what is required to achieve this in reality and the barriers envisaged. |
Feedback |
Feedback is generated on an ongoing basis through interactive live and asynchronous discussion, and review of formative assignments. Tutors will also provide individual, detailed comments on the summative end of course assignment. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically appraise the literature and theories underpinning personal and professional development (PPD).
- Evaluate the processes and tools used to support PPD.
- Clarify the environmental factors which enable or constrain staff development.
- Design a PPD plan and reflect upon its potential to impact upon career, colleagues, patients and students.
- Explain the relationship between personal and professional development (PPD) and the organisational systems in which it takes place.
