SummaryThis course introduces the student to the essential concepts of Clinical Education.
Clinical education will act as an umbrella term to allow students to examine the concepts, components and theories that are applicable to the clinical and academic setting . The acquisition of a critical attitude and intellectual curiosity will be encouraged as students are introduced to underpinning theories and the wider literature base of the subject. The course will build on the student¿s current experience and utilise challenged-based design to formulate questions and identify creative solutions to problematic areas in their own educational practice. The course will consider basic practical clinical educational delivery to both to students and fellow professionals, and continuing professional development. The academic skills required for postgraduate study will be considered and developed
Course description The course will be delivered online to Health Care Professionals with an interest in education who are either currently involved in clinical education or planning to develop into this area.

The course will be structured to encourage a learning environment that promotes the development of an academic community.

Students will be encouraged to share their experiences and make links between their learning and real-world educational practice.

A wider appreciation of the global practice of clinical education will be fostered by discussion between students encouraging the sharing of initiatives.

The course will foster the development of values relating to purposeful thinking, reflection and reasoning and the application of clinical education principles.

Formative Assessment
The opportunities for formative assessment will be built in throughout the course.

Summative assessment
This will be a progression from the Formative Assessment and will be weighted 100%. The summative assessment requires the student to plan and develop a relevant professional development activity, appropriate to their professional background. A personal workbook will be provided that the students can complete as they progress through the course and will form a proforma for the assignment (3,000-4,000 words).
Feedback Feedback is an on-going dialogue between staff and students using a combination of audio and written methods. Week 5 formative assignment feedback will be an opportunity for student reflection and a collaboration between the staff and students support study for the summative assessment.

The summative work will be marked with intext comments and an audio recorded summary provided.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify the core principles relating to clinical education and relate to a diverse range of educational settings.
  2. Critically reflect on the impact of practice environments on teaching & learning.
  3. Analyse current educational theories that improve the potential for learning in practice.
  4. Recognise the need for resilience within the Clinical Education setting.
  5. Introduce critical appraisal to inform action and contribute to developing knowledge in clinical education.
