Summary | Basic research in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology leads to detailed knowledge of biological systems, both normal and diseased, and indicates how new diagnostic and therapeutic tools may be developed with which to tackle diseases for which there may be no good treatments at present. The lectures in this course, given by experts drawn from different parts of the University and from associated research institutes in Edinburgh, illustrates how fundamental research can lead to improvements the health and welfare. This will be done by consideration of how defects in basic biological processes such as protein modification and DNA repair contribute to diseased states, and by the discussion of current research into specific conditions including cystic fibrosis and prion diseases. |
