Summary | Students will carry out a research project under the supervision of a member of staff. This occupies most of the second semester and two weeks after the Easter break.
Tutorial sessions are held during semester to develop critical skills for data analysis and interpretation.
Specific taught sessions will cover writing skills for abstract and grant proposal preparation.

Course description |
Project performance is assessed by the supervisor:
- understanding the project and its aims
- technical ability
- communication, initiative and independence
- commitment to the project
- record keeping
Project written report is assessed for:
- quality of presentation
- clear and logical description of the project aim and background
- clear description of methodology and results obtained
- discussion and interpretation of results
Short oral presentations will be assessed by programme organisers for:
- clear aims
- clear slides
- audibility, timing and enthusiasm
- clear summary
- handling of questions
The data-interpretation exam will assess the ability of students to understand and interpret complex experimental data; the importance of controls; and appropriate statistical analysis.
