SummaryThe aim of this course is to understand the role of full and partial coverage indirect restorations in dental patient care.
Course description The course will use recorded lectures, directed reading, tutor-led discussion, group project work all supported by specific learning tasks.
Treatment planning in the aesthetic zone will be reviewed along with colour matching and communication with the dental laboratory. It will encourage students to apply the principles underpinning material and restoration selection and tooth preparation and demonstrate appropriate clinical skills to support the delivery of indirect restorations. It will critically evaluate the use of provisional restoration and their role in soft tissue management and treatment planning and will evaluate the longevity of various types of indirect restorations with reference to the supporting scientific literature.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Apply the principles underpinning material and restoration selection and tooth preparation and demonstrate appropriate clinical skills to support the delivery of indirect restorations.
  2. Demonstrate competence in carrying out a full assessment of a clinical case where aesthetics are of particular importance and apply this in a clinical scenario.
  3. Critically evaluate the use of provisional/ temporary indirect restorations paying particular attention to form and function and demonstrate the clinical application of this technique.
  4. Explore and apply the principles and methods for colour matching of teeth to assist with the design of indirect restorations and evaluate methods for communicating this information to a peer group or dental team member.
  5. Evaluate the longevity of various types of indirect restorations with reference to the supporting scientific literature and apply this knowledge when discussing treatment options with patients.
