SummaryThis course offers an overview of the history of western music from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries. It contextualises the history of music in terms of wider cultural and philosophical trends, and introduces students to a wide-ranging repertoire of works composed during this broad period.

  2. Place a piece of music in the context of its historical period and identify representative stylistic characteristcs (Exam)
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the aesthetic theories that are introduced in the course (Presentation)
  4. Analyse the history of music in terms of its wider cultural and philosophical currents (Essay)
