This course provides an introduction to the analysis of tonal music, concentrating on Western art music of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It involves the study of musical scores alongside aural evidence obtained from listening. Analytical approaches covered include the Formal Functional theory of Schoenberg/Caplin, the Sonata Theory of Hepokoski, and brief introductions to Topic Theory and linear reduction/tonal prolongation in the manner of Heinrich Schenker. Composers featured include Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, with additional examples drawn from Bach, Handel, and Schubert.

Other requirements | You will work closely with musical scores, reading and interpreting conventional staff notation from the very start of the course. We will assume that you are fluent with this type of material. Visiting students must consult the Course Organiser before enrolling. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to describe musical form and structure by talking about compositional components and their interactions.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify specific information about a musical work via a score (e.g. key stylistic and structural features).
- Demonstrate the ability critically to analyse a musical work by evaluating the compositional effect of such features, drawing on your broader musical knowledge to contextualise the findings.
