| Summary | This course will introduce students to the variety of research methods used in the study of music. These may include: transcription and editing from a number of different historical periods and from recordings; archival research; the use of fieldwork and interviewing techniques; empirical research methods and experimental design; researching music for performance and the writing of programme notes; guidance on the design and preparation of a dissertation, a creative portfolio or a performance. |

- Be aware of a variety of research methodologies in use in the study of music, their benefits and their limitations
- Apply at least two different approaches to music research during the course
- Be able to select and apply methodologies they judge to be appropriate to a particular research question
- Be able to evaluate self-critically the success (or otherwise) of the approach selected
