Course description |
This course will develop students' creative keyboard skills and adaptability in a variety of styles including jazz, folk and pop. Students will explore harmonisation, improvisation, and accompaniment in these styles and others, and will apply these skills to individual exploration, the transformation of existing music, and the creation of new works. Skills learned will also be useful in the practice and teaching of music outside the formal concert environment. In addition to the formal course assessments, students will have the opportunity to showcase individual performance in a non-assessed Degree Show concert.

Additional Information (Assessment) |
Coursework (30%): The coursework will be assessed via practical exercises in tutorials, online quizzes, and written exercises undertaken outside of the tutorials.
Class Exam (30%): A 20-minute exam in Semester 2, Week 2.
Degree Exam (40%): A 30-minute exam in the May examination diet.
All assessment will take place digitally, by means of digital submissions and online exams in 2020-21. |

Verbal feedback will be provided throughout the course on a weekly basis at tutorials.
Written feedback is provided after the class exam in Week 2 of Semester 2 - this is provided within 15 working days. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate keyboard skills in a variety of styles including jazz, folk and pop.
- Understand harmony, improvisation and accompaniment in jazz, folk and pop idioms.
- Apply these newly developed skills to individual exploration, beyond the conventional 'classical' format.
