SummaryAn introductory course on audible acoustic waves in air, and of the vibration of simple systems including strings, bars and membranes, as well as acoustic tubes.
Course description The course consists of two parts: a lectured technical/mathematical component (weeks 1-8), and a hands-on practical component (weeks 9-12). In the first part of the course there are eight lectures and eight tutorials that cover a range of topics related to vibration and sound. In the second part of the course, during the final few weeks of teaching, you will undertake work on a short project, involving the analysis of room impulse responses.

Additional Information (Assessment) There are four assessed components in this course. These include three problem sets, plus the Acoustics Project. These will be due in Weeks 4,7,10 (problem sets) and 13 (project report). For the problem sets, you will be asked to work through a number of mathematical problems and to demonstrate your ability to solve them, using the concepts and skills learned in the lectures and in the tutorials. For the Acoustics Project, you will be asked to analyse a number of room impulse responses, and to provide a detailed report of your findings.

Feedback Students will receive staff and peer feedback on an ongoing basis as part of class discussion. Feedback on the problem sets will be provided by brief written comments and is intended to inform subsequent points of assessment, incl. the final project. Written feedback on the acoustics project will be provided within 15 working days of the hand-in date.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. 1. Demonstrate familiarity with the wave equation for string vibration and traveling wave decompositions.
  2. 2. Demonstrate familiarity with the equation of motion of a vibrating bar and with the equation of motion of a vibrating membrane.
  3. 3. Derive expressions for modal shapes and frequencies for simple systems and calculate expressions for phase and group velocity for a given system.
  4. 4. Demonstrate familiarity with the three-dimensional linear acoustic wave equation, including the assumptions and approximations made in its derivation.
  5. 5. Evidence an understanding of the basic principles of room acoustics, including the analysis of impulse response measurements.
