Summary | Person Centred Care: Policy and Practice will be of interest to those in Nursing and on the MA Health, Science and Society programme as well as those who have interests in health, social work and social sciences more generally. The course will draw on research and expertise from a range of health settings and populations, offering an opportunity to explore person centred care in an interdisciplinary context. |
Course description |
This course will give students an opportunity to explore and understand person centred approaches to care policy and practice. Over the course of ten two hour sessions, students will be introduced to the origins, principles and philosophy of person centred care before going on to critically engage with the application of these theoretical understandings across a broad range of healthcare settings. Emotional labour, emotional intelligence and reflection will be central to the wider discussion of professional, family and individual relationships in care practice.
Outline content is expected to include; theory and concepts of person centred care, theory of compassion in care and ethical practice, emotions and emotional intelligence, emotional labour and reflective practice, person centred approaches to hospital discharge, person centred approaches across the lifespan, across healthcare systems and outside of hospital, including identity and recovery, third sector, and youth work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically analyse the theory related to person centred care including reflection of self and others.
- Explore and debate contemporary issues impacting on person centred care in a range of practice settings.
- Discuss the concepts of emotional labour and emotional intelligence and their application to policy and practice.
- Critically analyse the service user perspective and the impact that person centred approaches have on patients, families, professionals and partnerships in care delivery.
