| Summary | Conducting Research in Nursing, Health and Social Care introduces students to key principles and methods in collection and analysing quantitative and qualitative data using a blended learning theory and practice approach.
This semester two course builds on the course, Designing Research in Nursing, Health and Social Care which is delivered in semester one.

| Course description |
Conducting Research in Nursing, Health and Social Care aims introduces students to some key data collection and analysis methods in nursing, health and social care research. This course will take students through key principles of collecting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data. For the quantitative element of this course, publicly available data will be provided e.g. Scottish Health Survey. In contrast, students are expected to collect qualitative interview or focus group data for later data analysis thus providing hands-on experience of developing interview questions and conducting interviews or focus groups.

Other requirements | First degree or equivalent. As required for the MSc Advancing Nursing Practice. A basic (undergraduate) knowledge of research methods is expected and/ or successful completion of Designing Research in Nursing, Health and Social Care. |

The summative assessment is the production and presentation of a conference poster on the topic of a data analysis approach (100%). The poster presentation will be tutor and peer assessed.
The formative assessment consists of a piece of reflective writing (700-1000 words) on doing field observations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of key methods in data collection and analysis and justify these choices in relation to methodology and epistemology.
- Understand the application of ethics principles and good ethical practice during data collection.
- Plan and conduct interviews and focus groups and prepare these data for data analysis.
- Gain an understanding of and apply key quantitative data analysis methods.
- Obtain transferable skills such as conference poster preparation and presentation.
