SummaryThis course provides an introduction to a range of musculoskeletal pain conditions. Pain management and treatment approaches to musculoskeletal pain are introduced and contemporary issues in the management of regional musculoskeletal pain will be considered.
Students will be encouraged to integrate and apply their previous experience and learning from the programme¿s core subjects to acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain problems.
Course description The course will be structured to introduce a range of aspects of musculoskeletal pain.

The content will include:
1. mechanisms of musculoskeletal pain
2. assessment of musculoskeletal pain
3. non-pharmacological treatments
4. other treatment and management approaches
5. regional problems

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of the principal mechanisms and multidimensional nature of musculoskeletal pain using appropriate terminologies and conventions
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of pain measurement and assessment as specifically applied to musculoskeletal pain conditions
  3. Critically appraise the contemporary approach to the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal pain
  4. Evaluate the current non-pharmacological, pharmacological and surgical approaches in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain
  5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the importance of effective and efficient communication with other healthcare professionals

Additional Information
Graduate Attributes and Skills During the course students will have to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others. Their knowledge and understanding of the topic will improve but they will also learn generic approaches/skills. As the course is delivered online, it will contribute to their IT, writing and communication skills which can be applied to both clinical and academic environments. Finally, students will be expected to be able to bring together and draw from the information provided through the course during their assignment writing. Competences such as structuring of work and accurate referencing would also be expected to improve.
