SummaryThis course aims to provide to students a hands-on experience of fundamental aspects of power engineering, including electric machines, power electronics, systems and control, through a series of laboratory practicals. The topics covered in this lab include are:

Power Electronics: DC-DC converters.
Electrical Machines: 3-phase induction and synchronous machines in motor and generator modes.
The students working in groups are carrying out lab exercises supported by academic and technical staff. Following the completion of each topic they submit a group report.
Course description Lecture:
- Introduction to power engineering laboratory: topics covered and lab induction.

Indicative laboratory practicals:
- Induction and synchronous machines: experimental characterisation, testing, reliability, and efficiency assessment.
- DC-DC converters: switching patterns, ripple, switching frequency, load impact, effect of inductor sizing, interpreting device and control IC datasheets

Pattern/Course Structure:
- Two hours of introductory lecture in week 1.
- Three hours of laboratory practicals per week during weeks 2-4 (power electronics), 7-9 (electrical machines). Assessments are in weeks 6 for power electronics and 11 for electrical machines.
- Three hours of lab support sessions per week during weeks 5 and 10.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain practical understanding of electrical power engineering fundamentals;
  2. Develop skills on characterisation and modelling of electrical machines;
  3. Develop understanding of the operational characteristics of 3-phase machines at steady state and under transients;
  4. Gain practical experience of power electronics and measurement techniques for power electronics and machines;
  5. Gain experience of control applications on various aspects of power engineering.
