SummaryThis course is the final part of the training year of the PhD with Integrated Study in Advanced Care that is undertaken within the Academy of the Advanced Care Research Centre (ACRC). The course content and assessment recognise the wide range of project topics and disciplinary backgrounds expected to be encompassed.

Students will apply the knowledge gained from the taught courses and group activity courses in Semester 1 and Semester 2, to an extended, in-depth, individual research project within a school (e.g. the school of one of the PhD supervisors) or within one of the ACRC partner organisations.

Course description The course aims to:

1) Provide advanced training and experience in the principles and practice of research, and in the critical analysis of data.

2) Develop problem solving abilities, critical assessment and communication skills, to a level appropriate to commence the main PhD research topic.

3) Employ these skills in preparing and writing a dissertation or report or article on an extended and demanding project.

4) Encourage and prepare students to become effective researchers and take full responsibility for their own learning.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. review the literature in their subject area, draw appropriate conclusions and use these in setting their project plan
  2. create a project plan and monitor progress against the plan use available equipment, facilities and research resources
  3. use available equipment, facilities and research resources creatively to address their chosen research topic
  4. carry out original research independently while knowing when to seek guidance from an experienced supervisor
  5. prepare and submit a formal project report for examination and present their project and results to an audience
