SummaryStudents undertaking this course will acquire advanced level understanding of a range of issues that pertain to contemporary cities, in a number of settings. They will learn about:
Key political and economic processes that drive development in contemporary cities.
How urbanisation is shaped differently in different contexts and why.
What theoretical propositions have been forwarded to account for such development.
The key political, economic and cultural processes shaping contemporary cities and the lives lived within them.
Course description Key theoretical templates for understanding the city.
Contemporary (and relevant historical) processes associated with the development of contemporary cities, including urban politics, rights to the city, cities and difference, urban cultures.
Course will have some urban based field trips. These should be fine for most students but some student, with specific types of disability, may face unanticipated issues of access. We would plan for trips where all students could be assured access.

Research and synthesis key debates and arguments with respect to urban processes and places.
Think critically and reflexively about contemporary urban processes and the explanations that are forwarded to account for them.
