SummaryPreparation for the MSc dissertation, including a literature review.
Course description This course will allow students to reflect on a subject area of their choice, become familiar with the important and current literature on the subject, and design a research project on the topic of their choice. Students will be introduced to on-line researching of the scientific literature and the skills required to identify potential areas for research. Students will use these skills to formulate their dissertation research projects. Students will present their research project proposals to each other (and other members of the School), as well as write a detailed project proposal, in the form of a dissertation proposal that will form the basis of the MSc dissertation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Design a research project with testable hypotheses and achievable goals
  2. Interrogate and critically assess existing scientific literature
  3. Design a research project and formulate a proposal
  4. Students will have a detailed, thorough and up to date understanding of geothermal energy resources, particularily as applied to the UK
Reading List
Students are expected to read widely on their selected topic area. Additional generic instruction in how to conduct research or write proposals etc. will be provided throughout the semester.
The reading list depends upon the project that the students choose for their project proposal, and the subject of the literature review (which may not be the same).
