| Summary | This course provides an introduction to a range of the primary sources available for the study medieval history. It also introduces students to the methodologies and theoretical approaches employed by historians in dealing with these sources.

| Course description |
This course is designed to provide an overview for MSc students of a selection of surviving medieval sources, the social contexts in which they were produced, the differing ways in which they have been interpreted by modern scholars and, where appropriate, a brief introduction to the technical skills needed for their study, such as codicology, palaeography, and diplomatic. The course is delivered through a programme of seminars, some of which may be held in the University Library Special Collections and the National Museum of Scotland (subject to availability). Topics for discussion may include (depending on the research interests of available staff): chronicles, hagiography, monastic rules, penitentials, wills and petitions. Lessons may also be offered on manuscripts, editions and material sources.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Show a detailed and critical command of the body of knowledge concerning the Sources of Medieval History
- Analyse and reflect critically upon relevant scholarship and conceptual discussions about the Sources of Medieval History
- Understand and apply specialised research or professional skills, techniques and practices considered in the course
