Summary | This workshop provides first-year history PhD students with the opportunity to reflect on and develop writing as a process, and then to offer research-in-progress papers to an audience largely composed of peers. In doing so they will test how effectively they are communicating their research findings in written form; to learn how to respond effectively to feedback; and to offer constructive feedback on the work of others. |
Course description |
At the outset, each student will decide on a piece of writing they want to develop over the course of the term. Most of the weekly sessions will then focus on an aspect of the writing process, such as conducting a literature review, working out the structure of a piece of writing, using primary sources, developing a clear and persuasive argument, or editing a draft. The last two or three sessions (depending on student numbers) will take the form of symposia in which each student circulates the piece of writing they have been working on, presents it to the other students, and receives feedback on it from all the students in the workshop.
