SummaryPlant Genome Diversity gives an overview of methodology for studying plant genomes.
Course description Plant Genome Diversity gives an overview of methodology for studying plant genomes. It also considers the drivers and mechanism of variation in genome structure and size across green plants and the consequences of this variation. It comprises lectures, wet labs in cytology and DNA extraction and dry labs in DNA sequence analysis.

Feedback Half of the course marks are awarded for a practical report and half for a written grant proposal. There is no formative assessment for the practical report associated with this course--students will have received feedback on previous practical reports in other courses. However, students will be able to discuss the content of their reports with the teaching staff. Students will be provided with training in writing in grant proposal format, in a tutorial, and will be provided with feedback on a written exercise.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Describe the drivers of plant genome diversity and discuss the underlying mechanisms.
  2. Explain the potential consequences of plant genome diversity and assess critically the experimental evidence for each.
  3. Demonstrate practical skills in making chromosome preparations for cytology and interpret chromosome preparations.
  4. Evaluate the findings of a cytological study of a plant genus and assess it in the context of wider knowledge about the genus and genome evolution.
  5. Apply theoretical knowledge and practical experience to propose a work-flow for analysis of plant genome sequences and prepare it in the format of a research grant proposal.
