SummaryThe aim of this course is to explore scientific literature supporting the use of technology applications in the delivery of prosthodontics care.
Course description In recent years there has been a commercial transition towards the use of computer technologies in the delivery of dental care as a whole. Dental laboratories are now increasing their use of computer assisted design with computer assisted manufacturing (CADCAM) techniques. This has the potential make the science supporting traditional manufacturing techniques redundant as technology companies are now at the forefront of driving patient care.

Understanding the scientific evidence base behind these changes is essential for a prosthodontist to critically review their efficacy. This course will explore evidence and practical application of the following themes:

Optical scanning versus traditional impression systems
Accuracy of CADCAM restorations
Integrating traditional treatment pathways with CADCAM pathways for optimal outcomes
Current trends digital model fabrication
The concept of digital design and communicating with the dental laboratory.

The course will use a combination of seminars and student lead presentations of their own work. Students will also be asked to prepare material in advance and present some cases to discuss via short presentations. Emphasis will be placed on students taking responsibility of exploring broader areas around the course themes as applied to clinical care.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify clinical problems and synthesise treatment plans in order to optimise them when using a CADCAM process.
  2. Critically evaluate the differences between traditional, hybrid and all digital approaches to patient care with respect to dental impressions and bite registrations.
  3. Critically evaluate the differences between traditional, hybrid and all digital approaches for CADCAM restorations.
  4. Demonstrate a critical scientific overview of additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques used in dentistry.
