| Summary | This course will cover the following topics: QI methods, Implementation science, Study design (Research v QI). Specific examples - Safer medicine management, Deteriorating patient, Central line sepsis. In many ways this course will prepare students for the coming dissertation year which will follow, preparing them for research methods and the ability to apply much of this new knowledge practically in their own field. An understanding of quality improvement methodology and implementation science will be included to prepare students for their dissertation project. This course will set the scene for the students project outline, i.e. what is the background, research question and aims of their dissertation. As such students may start to think about what type of improvement project they would like to set up and the secondary data analysis (systematic review or clinical audit or primary data collection) that will form the basis for their proposal. This will prepare them for a real-world application of a quality improvement project within their host institution. |

20% Asynchronous discussion boards. Students will be asked to critically appraise a quality improvement project of their choice and post 3 strengths and weaknesses onto the discussion board (SCQF 11.1)
40%: Group Reflective Poster (standard academic poster guidelines with 5 minute explanatory audit) account of how medicine management influences their workplace (SCQF 11.4). Pebble Pad online Portfolio tool can be used for this potentially.
40% Independent assignment - Students will be asked to submit a Patient information sheet/consent form written (in lay language) which can be for a hypothetical QI project to be run in their place of work. Essay to be no more than 2000 words (SCQF 11.5, 11.3)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have a critical understanding of the principle theories and concepts of quality improvement in healthcare, including research designs (SCQF 11.1) Be able to carry communicate to peers their critical appraisal of a quality improvement project (SCQF 11.4)
- Reflect upon their practical experience in their own workplace setting of demonstrating leadership and making an identifiable contribution to change and development and new thinking (SCQF 11.5, 11.3)
