SummaryThis course introduces students to a range of specialist techniques used in psychological research, particularly Cognitive Neuroscience. Techniques include: EEG, fMRI, TMS, fNIRS, and single-case statistics for neuropsychology.

Course is open only to those students enrolled within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS). Students outwith PPLS may contact the Course Organiser to query if any space is available after week 2.
Course description This course introduces students to a range of specialist techniques used in psychological research, particularly Cognitive Neuroscience, through a parallel series of technique-focused lectures, and practically-focused workshop-style events and/or online activities.

This course will cover the basic principles of these techniques, and their advantages and disadvantages, considering the sorts of research questions to which each might be applied.

Students are required to attend all lectures, and a set number of workshops, which may vary in a given year.

Feedback Each topic provides separate opportunities for interactive discussion and feedback allowing students to assess and improve their understanding of the topic - for example, seminar-style workshops or data processing classes in which principles are applied to examples.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. understand how the research question affects the choice of technique
  2. familiarise themselves with the scenarios in which the range of design types discussed are applicable
  3. become adept at describing the major data collection and processing procedures in a variety of the areas covered
