Course description The dissertation is divided into two components: (1) dissertation planning and (2) the dissertation project.
The dissertation planning course equips students with a critical and reflective understanding of the research design process to enable them to develop a feasible dissertation project and embark on it with confidence.

Formative assessment: Reflective blog on the process of developing ideas for the dissertation project (incl. topic, research questions, method and students' motivations for pursuing these ideas)

Dissertation proposal - The assessed proposal will include the following sections: aims and objectives; overview of literature on the chosen topic; methods and research design; ethical considerations; reflection(s) on the research design process. Worth 10% of the marks.


Final Dissertation - Present a comprehensive write up of the research and its findings (Max. 12,000 words including bibliography, excluding appendices) Worth 90% of the marks.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Select a research question/ area of study
  2. Develop an appropriate methodology to investigate their research question
  3. Prepare and analyse secondary data, or undertake a philosophical/ critical analysis of library materials
  4. Apply critical skills to evaluating the research they have carried out
  5. Present a comprehensive write up of the research and its findings (Max. 12,000 words excluding bibliography, appendices and data presentation)
