SummaryThe course provides an introduction to the key concepts of statistical methods typically used in public health research, and will introduce students to fundamental techniques used to describe, analyse and interpret quantitative parametric data for two groups.
Course description Topics to be covered include:

types of data
the relationship between population and sample
sampling methods
hypothesis testing
estimation - confidence intervals
univariate methods of analysis
power
multiple testing

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Show knowledge of the basic principles underlying statistical thinking
  2. Show knowledge of best practice in describing data statistically, using graphs and using tables
  3. Show knowledge of the commonly used two group statistical tests used in the literature.
  4. Demonstrate understanding by appraising taught statistical methods described and applied in the literature
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of how these principles are applied to real life data and be able to describe data and carry out simple statistical analyses using SPSS statistical software, and interpret them correctly
